Mines of Dhanbad

Dhanbad, Jharkhand

During my trip to Dhanbad, I witnessed firsthand how mechanized coal production has significantly reduced direct exposure of workers to the harmful fumes inside the mines, a positive development for their safety and well-being. However, the immense tonnage of coal extracted every year continues to release pollutants into the surrounding air, posing ongoing risks for local communities and degrading the city’s landscape. Observing the far-reaching impact of these mining operations reinforced my understanding that, while coal remains vital for powering our society, it is critical to adopt more sustainable practices and implement stricter environmental safeguards. Only then can we strike a balance between meeting our energy needs and preserving the health of both the people and the environment.
